I’ve only read a few details on it, but the Soylent team was working on some sort of low cost wireless network for the developing world before they dropped it completely to pursue Rob Reinhart’s low-cost food invention.
I don’t know how much of the change was due to it fitting their goal of helping the developing world, but Bill Gates would approve of the switch they made. From the article:
