So it's the day after I added unsweetened cocoa powder and it certainly helps with the nasty artificial sweetness so that's great. It's not even very chocolate-y either but I think maybe 1.5 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder may be enough (I added 2 for this test). The cocoa does mix much much better the next day after some shaking.
The unsweetened cocoa powder however does not do much to mask the weird enamel paint odor of Soylent 1.7 to my nose. Every sip, since this is my first pitcher of 1.7, reminds me of opening a can of house paint. I think it may be different now with the cocoa powder added in that the cocoa powder may hide some of the sweetness odor but even before the enamel paint odor was there.
I may slowly go through the box I have (and give a couple of bags to friends who stopped subscribing because of 1.6) and see what they think but I can't see myself subscribing to 1.7 unless I add unsweetened cocoa powder to it or something similar.
Right now 1.7 plus cocoa isn't a mindless sipping experience like 1.5 was, I don't look forward to the odor now mainly so I think about, am aware of, each sip if you know what I mean.
So, 1.7 on it's own is only slightly less disgusting than 1.6 was, the offensive odor and artificial sweetness don't linger as long.
1.7 + unsweetened cocoa powder largely eliminates the gross artificial sweet flavor but the enamel paint odor remains. At least that's my experience.
From MOST favorite to LEAST favorite powders:
1.3 - Just about perfect
1.2 - no problems, a little bland
1.5 - learned to like it
1.1 - made me ill, but otherwise not too different than 1.2
1.7 - slightly less disgusting than 1.6, smells like paint, adding unsweetened cocoa powder helps, so far no queasiness (too early to tell)
1.4 - slimy too-sweet unnatural disgusting, mentally didn't feel safe to consume
1.6 - far far too artificially sweet, smells like paint, made me very queasy after a glass
