I have seen a number of posts that have stated that the recommended maximum for added sugar is 25g for women and 37.5g for men. This is based on a slightly incorrect interpretation of the The American Heart Association’s (AHA) recommend. The AHA recommends that up to 50% of discretionary calories can be allocated to added sugar, that dose not include lactose and fructose from whole fruit. Discretionary calories are defined as the number of calories needed to achieve weight goals minus the calories consumed in pursuit of adequate nutrition. For example if I need 2000 calories to maintain my weight and can get all the fiber, amino acids, fatty acids, and micronutrients from 1500 calories then I have 500 discretionary calories to allocate to sugar, saturated fat, and/or alcohol.
